Bayou Appreciation Program

Needs and Benefits for the Bayou Appreciation Program

Getting people outdoors to experience our bayous and streams first-hand is one of the keys to building appreciation of the natural richness, benefits, and functions of these resources.  First-hand experience can also contribute to creating a culture that will celebrate, protect, and restore these streams for today’s citizens, and for future generations!  Bayou Preservation Association’s Bayou Appreciation Program aims to accomplish just that, through outdoor activities that are both fun and informative.

Meeting Bayou Preservation Association Goals through the Bayou Appreciation Program

The primary goal of Bayou Preservation Association’s Bayou Appreciation Program is to engage the public in safe, enjoyable, and informative outdoor opportunities for experiencing and exploring the bayous of our region.  Outdoor bayou activities will in turn create excitement, inspiration, and motivation to provide stewardship and informed support for our region’s bayous and streams, and for the Bayou Preservation Association, which works for their celebration, protection and restoration.

The Bayou Appreciation Program supports the Bayou Preservation Association’s Stewardship goal:   Increase stewardship and stewardship opportunities to improve the health of our watersheds, creeks and bayous.  The Bayou Appreciation Program also supports the Bayou Preservation Association’s Education and Outreach goal:  Increase understanding of area bayous and creeks and their watersheds.

Program Objectives and Key Components of the Bayou Appreciation Program

  • Increase access to the bayous, through development of safe and appropriate Texas Paddling Trails, that will introduce both experienced paddlers and other outdoor enthusiasts to safe and accessible opportunities for canoeing and kayaking on suitable bayous.
  • Increase public understanding and involvement with the bayous, with Bayou Preservation Association, and with Texas Paddling Trails, through signage, electronic media, Bayou Preservation’s annual symposium, and other sources.
  • Provide safe, enjoyable, and informative recreational opportunities, to experience and explore the bayous of our region, on land or on the water.  These may include providing safe, fun, and informative guided on-the-water paddle trips or walking/hiking experiences of our bayous; and an annual bayou regatta, to focus attention on a Texas Paddling Trail opportunity.
  • Steward the waterways of the Texas Paddling Trails, those that are currently sponsored by Bayou Preservation, to help keep the paddling trails clear of trash, litter, and safety obstacles, including on-the-water paddle clean-ups in coordination with Bayou Preservation Association’s Trash-Free Bayous program.
