Steve Hupp reports:
Eric Ruckstuhl and I had another great outing with Hermann Park Conservancy on Friday, 12/18/09! We guided about 20 active 6th graders in removing invasive plants while another 20 spread mulch under trees in another area. This was a community service project for these students. We removed Brazilian Vervain, Chinese Tallow Tree, a crape myrtle, a camphor tree, and several white mulberry. We also removed litter from natural areas and one island. 4 boys and I used cutting tools under my supervision and the balance pulled Brazilian Vervain by hand as the soil was the proper moisture to get the roots out. Eric provided guidance, identification, encouragement and herbicide spraying. We worked around (and avoided) poison ivy that was in fall color. Sam Molina of Hermann Park Conservancy recognized BPA as a partner in this project and asked me to provide a brief discussion of invasives. I also discussed the need to keep mulch away from the root flare. I gave them probably more than they wanted, and I also built on their science knowledge while I was at it. The 6th graders had a great time and learned about nature in a hands on way! They also had a lot of insightful questions that I was glad to be able to answer.
