Bayou Stewardship & Engagement
Bayou Preservation Association’s Bayou Stewardship & Engagement program supports urban water quality and restoration outcomes by building public understanding, stewardship capacity, and sustained care for Houston’s bayous.
This program connects residents to local waterways through structured outdoor learning, guided bayou walks, and seasonal programming that increase awareness of bayou function, watershed conditions, and the role people play in maintaining healthy urban waterways. Activities are designed to be accessible and inclusive, ensuring that communities across Houston can participate meaningfully in bayou stewardship.

By fostering informed participation and shared responsibility, this work complements BPA’s water, land, and, pathways efforts, helping ensure that improvements to bayou systems are understood, supported, and sustained.

Start Here: Discovering Nature Along the Bayous
Start Here offers place-based programming that helps residents explore Houston’s bayous and better understand how urban waterways function. Led by Bayou Preservation Association, the series brings together guided experiences, local context, and applied learning to connect people with ongoing water quality, restoration, and stewardship efforts.
Walks are designed to build understanding, encourage participation, and support long-term stewardship of Houston’s bayous through accessible, outdoor engagement.
Summer Resiliency Workshop Series
The Summer Resiliency Workshop Series is a seasonal education and stewardship initiative designed to support practical, household-scale actions that contribute to urban water quality and neighborhood resilience. Led by Bayou Preservation Association, the series consists of three hands-on workshops held in June, July, and August, each focused on a different nature-based or water-smart practice.

Workshops combine applied learning with take-home resources, helping participants understand how everyday actions, such as rainwater harvesting, can reduce runoff, conserve water, and support healthier bayou systems.

The series is delivered in collaboration with technical and community partners, including the Harris County Master Gardeners Association, and is supported by philanthropic and corporate partners committed to climate resilience and environmental stewardship.

Improving Waterways Through Action and Education
Thanks to a generous grant from Port Houston, the Bayou Appreciation Program is embarking on a multifaceted project within Jim and Joann Fonteno Park.

This endeavor aims for collective and equitable impact - actively involving the community. We approach this work by;
-
Organizing volunteer litter cleanups to mitigate the influx of trash into our waterways,
-
Installing interpretive signage throughout the park that encapsulates the essence of the community while providing valuable environmental insights,
-
Conducting guided educational walks to inform park users about the local ecology.
