Bayou Stewardship & Engagement

Bayou Preservation Association’s Bayou Stewardship & Engagement program supports urban water quality and restoration outcomes by building public understanding, stewardship capacity, and sustained care for Houston’s bayous.

This program connects residents to local waterways through structured outdoor learning, guided bayou walks, and seasonal programming that increase awareness of bayou function, watershed conditions, and the role people play in maintaining healthy urban waterways. Activities are designed to be accessible and inclusive, ensuring that communities across Houston can participate meaningfully in bayou stewardship.

By fostering informed participation and shared responsibility, this work complements BPA’s water, land, and, pathways efforts, helping ensure that improvements to bayou systems are understood, supported, and sustained.

Living Roots is a public program that integrates cultural practice with applied ecological science to interpret native plant communities along Houston’s bayou systems. Through a series of guided walks led by a cultural practitioner, the program examines how native species function within riparian environments, contribute to water quality and habitat stability, and reflect long-standing relationships between people and place.

The project is grounded in a stewardship framework, positioning bayous as dynamic systems shaped by both ecological processes and human interaction. Walks are structured to build foundational knowledge of native plant identification, introduce participants to the ecological roles these species play within watershed systems, and reinforce the importance of long-term maintenance and care in sustaining healthy urban waterways.

Participants receive a Bayou Pocket Guide as a field-based reference to support ongoing observation and engagement beyond the program. The guide is intended to extend learning into continued, place-based interaction with Houston’s bayous.

Timeline: Spring and Fall 2026

Summer Resiliency Workshop Series

The Summer Resiliency Workshop Series is a seasonal education and stewardship initiative designed to support practical, household-scale actions that contribute to urban water quality and neighborhood resilience. Led by Bayou Preservation Association, the series consists of three hands-on workshops held in June, July, and August, each focused on a different nature-based or water-smart practice.

Workshops combine applied learning with take-home resources, helping participants understand how everyday actions, such as rainwater harvesting, can reduce runoff, conserve water, and support healthier bayou systems.

The series is delivered in collaboration with technical and community partners, including the Harris County Master Gardeners Association, and is supported by philanthropic and corporate partners committed to climate resilience and environmental stewardship.

Improving Waterways Through Action and Education

Thanks to a generous grant from Port Houston, the Bayou Appreciation Program is embarking on a multifaceted project within Jim and Joann Fonteno Park.

This endeavor aims for collective and equitable impact - actively involving the community. We approach this work by;

  • Organizing volunteer litter cleanups to mitigate the influx of trash into our waterways,

  • Installing interpretive signage throughout the park that encapsulates the essence of the community while providing valuable environmental insights,

  • Conducting guided educational walks to inform park users about the local ecology.

At Bayou Preservation Association, we work to protect and restore Houston’s bayous through applied science, targeted restoration, and collaboration. By translating data into action and connecting resources to areas of greatest need, we strengthen bayou function, reduce environmental risk, and support resilient communities across the Houston region.
